Alignment of verification activities with design and development within SCRUM
Agile development practices have gained widespread acceptance in software development, enabling close work-review-rework loops between stakeholders and developers. While these feedback loops incorporate requirement engineering, software design and software development domains, a systematic procedure for organizing and executing verification activities is neglected in the general approach of agile paradigms. This forces inevitable quality assurance measures outside of the agile framework or causes significant ambiguities when test activities meet agile methodology.
Based on experience gained within medical device software development this talk outlines the benefits of agile software development and evaluates the advantages as well as drawbacks of conducting verification activities outside the applied agile framework. Taking the agile SCRUM methodology and a V-model based development process as basis, two ways of incorporating the verification activities are discussed: integrating verification activities as a part of the software development within the same process and maintaining a parallel process specifically for the verification activities independent of the actual software development. Given the proposed adaptations, best practices are derived to fit the framework to various business needs.
